While President
Hayes was President (1877-1881) a mini Republican meeting was held here in Bucyrus,
President Hayes was a dinner guest of Jacob Scroggs and he spent the night in the
southwest bedroom.
Vice-president Dawes who was vice-president under President Coolidge from 1925-1929
was a law student classmate of Charles Scroggs. He also was a guest in this house. He
stayed in the southwest bedroom also.
The Historical Society is proud to have a dresser which was in the White House. In
the southwest bedroom you will find a dresser that was used during the term of President
James K. Polk 1845-1849. Our dresser was purchased by Ex-Governor Wilson Shannon, Ohio's
governor from 1838-1844. After his term,
Gov. Shannon lived in St. Clairsville, Ohio. He moved West to become Governor of the
Territory of Kansas in 1855. At that time Mrs. Josephine Metzger's maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Lewis, lived in St. Clairsville, and purchased the
historic dresser at the Shannon sale. The dresser was inherited by Mrs. Metzger's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Caldwell, who lived in Bucyrus in the frame house across from
the Presbyterian Church where Mrs. Metzger was born. The dresser has been in Josephine
Caldwell Metzger's possession until she gave it to the Historical Society.
